Day 24: Gateway into the Spirit Realm

Date: June 19th, 2019

Miles Traveled: 70

Weather: Beautiful. Partly/mostly cloudy.

Physical Status: Tired, but good

Summary:

  • Left La Valle at around 8:00AM and traveled along the “400” State Trail, the Elroy-Sparta Trail, and the Sparta-La Crosse Trail for most of the day. A significant portion of the Elroy-Sparta Trail was closed due to rain damage — had to take alternative routes through the countryside, which was quite scenic albeit challenging.
  • Saw my first Wisconsin “bluff”
  • Rode alongside two deer while descending down a large hill overlooking a valley of farmland.
  • Enjoyed beautiful weather and evenly-spaced, mid-sized cumulus clouds dotting the sky as I bopped along highway 71 to tunes such as “More Than a Feelin'”, “Rock the Casbah” and “Danger Zone.”
  • Ate gas station hot dogs for lunch because it was the only quick food available in the area — beggars can’t be choosers. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • Hopped on “America’s #1 Bike Trail” in Norfolk, Wisconsin and happened upon a 3/4 mile, pitch black tunnel (yes, a 3/4 mile, pitch black tunnel) that felt like a gateway into the spirit realm. I decided to walk through with my bike using only the light coming from the other side as a guide; an experience that was almost trance-like. The light on the far side of the tunnel prevented my eyes from adjusting to the dark, causing everything else to appear absolutely pitch black. The only sounds were the constant drip of water flowing along the sides of the passageway and the crunch of my feet on the gravel surface. It wasn’t necessarily the most grand or profound experience I’ve had thus far in my life, but damn it was one of the coolest.
  • Arrived in La Crosse, Wisconsin at around 7:00PM and stayed with a couple via Warmshowers named Michelle and Keith. We had an awesome taco dinner together in their quant mobile home and talked about Keith’s son (a design engineer for Black Diamond), home schooling from a frustrated parent’s perspective, packaging waste, buying things in bulk, and paragliding.
